Ever since I used to run the Action Quake Super League, and even before that, I have been getting many questions regarding Action Quake 2, ranging from the simple questions to the technical. Because of this, I decided to write a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) file for Action Quake 2.

2. Gameplay Related Questions
New players of Action Quake 2 will probably be quite confused by all the new commands, weapons, items and the gameplay. Here I'll try to explain the basics of them.
2.1 Weapons
The first thing most people will notice are the weapons in AQ2, they are totally different from those in Quake 2. We'll detail each weapon below, with their strengths and weaknesses.
2.1.1 Heckler & Koch MP5/10 Submachinegun
The Heckler & Koch MP5 is probably one of the most widespread anti-terrorist weapons in the world.
The MP5 is the 'normal' submachinegun in AQ2. It is highly accurate, fast firing and has a large magazine. It's only drawback is is that it doesn't do as much damage as the M4 does. This weapon has two firemodes, one being full automatic and the other one is burst fire, which fires three rounds and is very accurate.
This weapon can be used effectively on almost every map.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   H&K MP5/10
Rounds:   30
Max Extra Clips:   2 (30 bullets each)
Max Extra Clips (Bandolier):   4 (30 bullets each)
Weapon Modes:   Automatic
Burst Fire
Items it can be used with:   Laser Sight
Silencer

2.1.2 Benelli Super 90 M3 Shotgun
The M3 Shotgun is, next to the handcannon, the best close range weapon in the game. With one shot, if all the pellets hit, you can take down everybody. Unfortunately, the further away someone is, the more chance you have that you won't hurt someone as the spread gets worse and worse. At long range, this weapon is almost useless.
This weapon is best used where close combat and medium combat is common.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   Benelli Super 90 M3
Shells:   7
Max Extra Shells:   14 Rounds
Max Extra Shells (Bandolier):   28 Rounds
Weapon Modes:   Not Relevant
Items it can be used with:   None

2.1.3 SIG Sauer SSG 3000 Sniper Rifle
As the name says, this is the Sniper Rifle in AQ2. It is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, and when zoomed, it is 100% accurate. A hit from this gun on a target's chest or stomach without a kevlar vest will almost certainly kill the target, and a headshot means a certain kill. When someone is wearing kevlar, you will still do the person a lot of damage, as the bullets fired by this gun are Armor Piercing.
The weapon modes of the Sniper Rifle are using it's scope to Zoom. When zoomed, your accuracy is 100%. Unfortunately, when zoomed, close range combat isn't recommended.
This weapon is effective on any map where medium and long range combat is common.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   SIG Sauer SSG 3000 Sniper Rifle
Bullets:   6
Max Extra Bullets:   20 Bullets
Max Extra Bullets (Bandolier):   40 Bullets
Weapon Modes:   No Zoom
Zoom 2x
Zoom 4x
Zoom 6x
Items it can be used with:   Silencer

2.1.4 Colt M4 Carbine
The M4 is a shorter and lighter version of the M16 and is the most powerful machinegun in AQ2. It has 20% less ammo than the MP5 does, and is less accurate, but it makes up for that in its firepower. It does a lot of damage, and two or three hits on an enemy, other than in the legs, will kill a person. The major drawback of the M4 is that the barrel will rise when used in full automatic mode. This requires people to adjust to that rise, and it requires some skill to master it.
The weapon has two fire modes, just like the MP5. It has a 3 round burst mode, and the default full automatic mode.
This weapon is best used on maps where medium range combat is taking place. This weapon is also very lethal at close range.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   Colt M4 Carbine
Rounds:   24
Max Extra Clips:   1 (24 bullets each)
Max Extra Clips (Bandolier):   2 (24 bullets each)
Weapon Modes:   Automatic
Burst Fire
Items it can be used with:   Laser Sight

2.1.5 12 Gauge Handcannon
The most powerful weapon in the game is the handcannon, a sawed off double barrel shotgun. Because of the short barrel, the spread of the handcannon makes is useless if it is being used at any range beyond short range, but if you hit someone at short to pointblank range, you are almost guaranteed a kill, sending your opponent flying across the room. It uses the same ammo as the Shotgun does, only in stead of one shell per shot, this weapon uses two shells per shot.
Due to the nature of this weapon, it is best used in buildings and other areas where close range combat happens a lot.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   Handcannon
Shells:   7
Max Extra Shells:   14
Max Extra Shells (Bandolier):   28
Weapon Modes:   Not Relevant
Items it can be used with:   None

2.1.6 SOG 37 Combat Knife
Another weapon you start with, is the SOG 37 Combat Knife. This weapon is usually your last resort weapon. (Unless, of course, you selected the Combat Knife as your weapon in teamplay) It can be used to stab your opponent with, which causes massive damage or throw it.
Throwing the knife requires some skill as you have to predict the arc it is thrown with. But, as with a stab, usually when you hit someone, you will kill someone.
The Combat Knife can be selected as a weapon in Teamplay, then you will start with 10 extra knifes.
This weapon can be used effectively on almost every map.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   SOG 37 Combat Knife
Knifes:   1
Max Extra Knifes:   A lot
Weapon Modes:   Stab
Throw
Items it can be used with:   Not Relevant

2.1.7 Heckler & Koch MK23 Pistol
One of the weapons you will always start with it is the MK 23. This weapon holds 12 rounds (and one in the chamber) and you can hold two extra clips for it. It isn't the most powerful weapon in the game, but it is very good on it's own. The Heckler & Koch MK23 is the preferred weapon of the US Special Operations COMmand, where it has been designated the MK 23 MODEL 0 US SOCOM. .
Because the MK23 can be switched between automatic and semi-automatic, it can also be used to pick off people from a distance (in semi automatic mode) and at close range (using automatic fire). In semi automatic mode, the gun will fire one bullet at the time, which is fairly accurate, while in automatic mode, it'll fire automatically until the fire button is released or the clip is empty.
This weapon can be used effectively on almost every map.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   H&K MK23
Rounds:   12
Max Extra Clips:   2 (12 bullets each)
Max Extra Clips (Bandolier):   4 (12 bullets each)
Weapon Modes:   Automatic
Semi-Automatic
Items it can be used with:   Laser Sight
Silencer

2.1.8 Akimbo Pistols
The Akimbo Pistols are two MK23 pistols together, giving one 24 shots. The akimbo isn't very accurate, but it can kill someone quite fast.
Stats:
Code: Select all
Weapon Name:   Akimbo Pistols
Rounds:   24
Max Extra Clips:   2 (12 bullets each)
Max Extra Clips (Bandolier):   4 (12 bullets each)
Weapon Modes:   Automatic
Items it can be used with:   None

2.1.9 M26 Fragmentation Grenade
The M26 Fragmentation Grenade is one of the weapons people don't see often as most servers have them turned off. But, the grenade is one of the most useful weapons in the game to take out large groups of enemies at ones. As grenades are thrown, you can bounce them around corners, thus getting your enemy without them seeing you.
The grenade has 3 weapon modes, short, medium and long. These refer to the range the grenade is throw. At short and probably medium, the grenade will probably land close to you so you'll have to move to prevent getting into the blast radius. When thrown, it'll take about 2 seconds for it to detonate. Besides the weapon mode, the grenade will be thrown further away if you keep the fire button pressed for a longer time (before you throw).
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   M26 Fragmentation Grenade
Rounds:   Not Relevant
Max Extra:   1 Grenades
Max Extra (Bandolier):   2 Grenades
Weapon Modes:   Short
Medium
Long
Items it can be used with:   None

2.1.10 Kick
One really overlooked 'weapon' or 'feature' in AQ2 is the kick. When you jump against someone (not on your own team when Friendly Fire is off), it might cause the person to get kicked away. The kick will make the person drop his/her weapon and causes 20 damage.
Another use of kicking is to kick a door open. When someone is behind it, that person will get kicked and the door will open.
Code: Select all
Stats:
Weapon Name:   Kick
Rounds:   Not Relevant
Extra Clips:   Not Relevant
Weapon Modes:   Not Relevant
Items it can be used with:   Not Relevant

2.2 Items
Besides the weapons, AQ2 has also items which affect gameplay. These are detailed below.
2.2.1 Kevlar Vest
The Kevlar Vest is the only protection one can have besides hiding behind something on a map. The vest will protect your chest from damage. This doesn't mean that you won't be hurt, you will get a bit of damage cause you'll feel the bullet hit, but you won't bleed, unless you get hit by the Sniper Rifle or M4. The vest isn't useful against the Handcannon or Shotgun.
This item is good for those people who need to get up close to the enemy or for snipers who want to have some protection.
2.2.2 Laser Sight
The Laser Sight is a targeting aid. It makes a red dot appear wherever you are aiming. It does increase the accuracy on the Pistol and the MP5. On the M4, it's effect isn't that great as on the MP5 and Pistol, but it's still noticeable.
This weapon is very useful for those people who use the MP5 or Pistol and want to hit people in the head.
2.2.3 Bandolier
The Bandolier is a multi purpose item. It's first use is that it will increase the amount of weapons you can carry and allows you to carry twice as much ammo for each weapon. One more clip or an extra weapon can save your day. The second use is that it has a InfraRed vision goggle in it. If you turn that on, every player will light up, making them easy targets. It's third use only applies to servers where it is turned on, the bandolier also supplies players with 1 grenade.
This item can be used with any weapon and is useful on almost every map.
2.2.4 Stealth Slippers
The Stealth Slippers do just what they say: they hide the sound you make from moving. It also will hide the sound you make when you jump, unless you hurt your legs of course.
This item is very useful for close maps where you want to sneak up to people.
2.2.4 Silencer
The Silencer doesn't only silence a weapon, it also will hide the muzzle flash. Also, an enemy killed with the silencer won't make as much noise as those killed without one.
This item is very useful on maps where the MP5 or Pistol user wants to kill someone without making a lot of sound.
2.3 Gameplay
The main thing that differs Action Quake 2 from most other mods is it's gameplay. Since it is based on realism, it means that every time you get hit, it could mean the end of you.
Some of the features are:
• Realistic Damage Location. This means that when you're hit in your legs, your movement will be affected and you can't jump anymore. When you're hit in your head, you're most likely going to be dead.
• Realistic Physics. This means you can't jump of a tall building and expect to come out unharmed. If you're lucky you'll just damage your legs, if not, you're dead.
• Bleeding. When you are hit, you will start to bleed. You will have to stop and bandage to prevent yourself from bleeding to death.
• Realistic Maps. The maps of Action Quake 2 are based on realistic settings, such as cities and buildings.

Action Quake 2 also has two modes of play: Teamplay and Deathmatch.
Deathmatch is just like the normal Deathmatch, only with the AQ2 features.
With Teamplay it is two teams against each other. When you join a team, you get to pick your weapon and item. There will be no weapons on items on the map (unless you kill someone, you can pick up that person's weapon and item then if you want to). A team will have won a round if they eliminated the other team. This also means that if you get killed during a round, you have to wait till one of the two teams wins. Usually a round takes between the 10 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the map and the players.
2.4 Commands
Of course, a mod as different as Action Quake 2 has a few special commands, which are detailed below. The have to be bound to a key, which is done in the console or config file (see below) by typing:
bind X "command"
For example: bind b "bandage" to make B the key to press when I want to bandage my wounds.
The comands listed with a * should be bound, the rest isn't always needed.
* reload - Reloads your weapon when empty. You need to have an extra clip for this to work. Also, keep in mind that when you reload, all the ammo you had left in the clip that was loaded will be gone
* bandage - This will bandage your wounds and will make you stop bleeding. While bandaging, you cannot fire. Bandaging will also fix damage you got from falling and restore movement.
* opendoor - This command is used to open doors. Doors wont open by just running against them as in normal Quake 2.

The rest of this file is optional for reading

team - This will allow you to change to a team manually. Team 1 makes you join the 1st team, team 2 makes you join the 2nd one. Team none makes you leave your team and join the spectators.
irvision - This toggle will activate/deactivate InfraRed vision when you got a bandolier.
motd - This will show the Message Of The Day of the server. This command will show the map rotation as well.
id - This will toggle the showing of player names in game on and off. It's on by default.
hand - in addition to the normal Q2 modes hand modes (0 = right-handed, 1 = left-handed, 2 = "center"-handed), you can select "classic" style shooting (where shots end up left/right and below the crosshair), or "classic high" style shooting (where shots end up left/right of the crosshair). You do need to use the quotation marks to enter these commands in the console.
radio - sends a message on the radio, in whatever your default mode is (set with the "channel" command, defaults to team). Useable in teamplay, teams-by-skin DM, or teams-by-model DM. Valid messages are:
1 ("one")
2 ("two")
3 ("three")
4 ("four")
5 ("five")
6 ("six")

radiogender - used without an argument, displays your current radio gender. If used with "male" or "female", sets your radio gender to that gender. This changes the voice on your radio messages. Default is male.
radio_power - toggles your radio power on or off (default is on). If your radio power is off, you won't receive any radio messages, but also can't send any.
radiopartner - sends a radio message to your partner, see the "radio" command for the valid messages.
radioteam - sends a radio message to your team, see the "radio" command for the valid messages. channel - toggles your default radio destination (see the "radio" command) between team and partner. Default is team.
say_partner - sends a message to your partner, in much the same way as "say_team" sends a message to your team.
partner - attempts to establish a partnership. You must have the person you want to partner with's name displayed on your HUD, then use the "partner" command to send a partnership request to him. The other player will have the chance to accept (by doing the same thing to you), or denying by ignoring you or using the "deny" command (see below).
deny - deny a partnership request (see "partner" command above).
unpartner - breaks your current partnership.
choose - chooses a particular item or weapon as your item or weapon, without going through the menus, in teamplay (ie: "choose mp5/10 submachinegun" or "choose lasersight"). Here is the list of items and weapons:
